Rainbow Looms
A new trend has taken over the kid’s craft world: the Rainbow Loom. Tiny rubber bands are used to create bracelets, rings and keychains with all sorts of patterns and designs. Ella loves it and received a rainbow loom along with many rubber bands for Christmas. She even went to a birthday party where the featured activity was the rainbow loom. She came home with a box to sort out the colors. I am a fan of the loom, but not a fan of finding rubber bands everywhere. (Olena likes to eat them.) We did have a family funny involving Ella, an unattended Rainbow Loom rubber band box left outside in the garage and Dessie. Dessie crashed her bike into Ella’s newly color-sorted rubber bands in the garage. Her excuse: “The bike did it.” She again tried to extricate herself from all blame when it happened a second time.
Our neighborhood has never looked prettier. The combination of a beautiful sunny day, a box of chalk and a Saturday afternoon led to hours of entertainment and several cute chalk critters. It was clear that the kiddos are enamored with candy and Despicable Me lately. Several of the creatures were sugar-based concoctions and the rest were very minion-like.
Art Lessons
This month’s favorite art project was the dream catcher that Kayla made with Charlotte. Kayla took it straight up to her bedroom and hung it on her bed. Ella was particularly envious of the creation and started asking me for blue colored yarn and scrapbook paper. I’ve also noticed that Dessie likes to troll the halls and peek into the den when Kayla and Charlotte are in a session. However, both girls seem content to allow this activity to be just for Kayla. (It may be because their favorite TV program, The Wild Kratts, comes on during art lessons.)
Family Picnic
We made our day off for Martin Luther King day extra special by enjoying a picnic lunch at Grapevine Lake with the Swartz family. The day was just beautiful. I packed a light jacket for everyone, but we shed them very quickly. The girls started a shell collection and the bees enjoyed our delicious treats. Luckily, no one was stung. It was altogether a lovely experience! I hope we will do it again soon!
