Traditions...Christmas Eve Sleepover

(The Lewis siblings with their new pillowcases as doo rags.)

I really think that one of the reasons the holidays are so wonderful is because they are so steeped in traditions. For example, my family always watches the Albert Finney version of Scrooge a couple nights before Christmas. We know it so well, we can quote long passages and sing all of the songs. Even though we know the movie so well, the funny thing is, I don't think we would feel like it was really Christmas if we missed out on this tradition. So, it shouldn't surprise any of you when I tell you that all of my siblings gathered to sleep in the same room (my room) on Christmas Eve night. We've been doing this for so many years, it just seemed like the only right thing to do. It originally started so that we could collectively prevent my dad from trying to push our alarm clarks back a few hours (yes, we always woke up around 5:00 Christmas morning and he tried to push it back to 8:00). So, we would gather in one room with several hidden alarm clocks to prevent a sleeping-in disaster from occurring. It's become such a pasttime that this year my mom made Christmas pillow case covers for everyone in the family along with a poem to celebrate this traditional sleepover. It would be incorrect to say we all slept very well. Sleeping in the same room means that there are always a few sleeping on the ground...but, who gets much sleep anyway!! We had so much fun playing games and watching movies that sleep was pretty elusive that night. I still wouldn't trade it in for a better night's sleep anyday.

We are bummed that we missed the sleep over. However- we had a great night sleep on our Christmas pillow cases as well!

Lauren, I love your family! You guys are so much fun and I love that you had a sleepover with all of your siblings with all of your matching pillow cases, I love it. I'm so glad that you guys had such a wonderful Christmas with your family in Texas! And I agree, Christmas would not be Christmas without all of the family traditions, and I love the alarm clock tradition in your family! :)

My mother in law made similar pillowcases with cute poem to accompany them a few years ago. And then I made a bunch for friends and family members too. Is the poem the "Twas the night before Christmas" variation one that your Mom used?

What a great sport you are to continue your growing-up traditions, even though you're married and a Mom. I'm impressed. I would have loved having my family here too for the holidays. Fun!
