This is a picture of my Valentine’s date (held on February 7). I am not sure why I am not in the picture! This year, February 14th landed on a Friday of a three-day weekend with President’s day on Monday. It also happened to be the kick-off to a BYU baseball tournament in Arizona. Stephen decided he wanted to attend to see his brother Dallen play. He has been very excited and actively planning all the details of his stay. I have been designated to stay-at-home and hold down the fort. So Stephen had to promise me an awesome pre-Valentines day date. We decided to check out a place that we hear about often, but have never been to ourselves—Twisted Root—a burger joint in Roanoke. As promised, it was a delicious experience. We also discovered that it shares a street corner with Babes and Hard Eight—two of our other favorites restaurants. We will definitely be traveling to Roanoke more often from now on!
Season of Love
6 bags of rolos
2 bags of pretzels
1 bag of m&ms
6 tubes of Burt’s Bees chapstick
30 Valentine sacks
8 bags of rainbow loom rubber bands
1 package of white cardstock
These items were on my grocery list the week before Valentines Day. We love holidays because it gives us a chance to show gratitude for the many people who help us. It really takes a village! We thanked our neighbors, teachers, friends and family with a few special goodies and naturally included some great pictures of the girls too. The grandparents all received a copy of the girl’s piano solos from 2013. We are very lucky to have so many wonderful people in our lives!
Valentines Eve (Above)
Valentines is such a sweet holiday. The girls had a wonderful time preparing Valentines for their friends and embellishing boxes to receive their own letters and treats. A happy couple of hours were spent decorating the boxes pictured above. Priceless! Because Stephen’s flight left late on the evening of February 13, we decided to let our kiddos open up their Valentines packages the night before. This year I purchased everyone a special book. When we visited Great Grandma Lewis over the summer, she insisted that we read a couple of her favorite children’s stories to the girls: “This is Not My Hat,” and “I Want My Hat Back.” I feel these will be great to have in our collection as a reminder of our special grandma. Plus, Kayla is enthralled with Mo Wilems and Ella is eagerly tearing through the Legend of the Guardian series. They each received a special book. This may become our Valentines traditions: book and chocolates!
Cupid Comes
The morning of Valentines Day started extra special with a visit from Cupid! Cupid is so sneaky. He usually comes at night, but this year he mixed it up with a breakfast visit. Stephen was already in AZ and I was seated at the table. So thanks to the magic of a wireless doorbell, the girls were completely surprised by the stack of gifts left at the door from Cupid! Mommy and Daddy were totally exonerated as possible suspects!

With Daddy out of town, the path was cleared for an all-girl Valentines Day or Galentines! After school, we invited our good friends over for a party. I put together a few fun Valentines activities and treats. We purchased a “heart-shaped” Papa Murphy’s pizza, used a cookie cutter to remove hearts from our apples and we made heart ornaments using wax paper, crayon bits, ribbon and an iron a la Friend magazine. We ended the night by watching the Olympics. It was cute to see all of the girls so engaged in the Olympics! At bedtime, Dessie turned to me and said, “This day was incredible!”
Stephen went to Arizona to see his brother Dallen play at the BYU baseball games being held in Phoenix. He had a great time! The weather was awesome—gotta love AZ in the winter. Plus, he had the freedom to show up at the games plenty early (I usually resist showing up the hour or two or even three early that he prefers.) He enjoyed watching Dallen from pregame practice to the very last minute of the ninth inning. He was also able to visit the Gilbert, Arizona temple open house and spend a lot of time with family. He chose to stay at Papa and Nana’s home in order to have vehicle access and he enjoyed reminiscing with them and looking over family history books. He used his birthday money to finance the trip and the verdict is that it was well worth it!
