April Fool's! (Belated...hey, it's still April!)

Ella woke up on April Fool's Day wondering if it was a "joke" day. I could tell she had been discussing this "joke day" in school and there was still some unresolved confusion when we had this conversation:

Ella: What is a good April Fool’s joke?
Lauren: Something that will make you laugh, but not something that would hurt anyone.
Ella: So, is it a good joke if I ripped up a book?
Lauren: NO. You should also not hurt anything.
Ella: I don’t get it. What’s funny about that? (someone’s been watching too many America’s Funniest Home Video episodes).

She was pleased to understand a little better when I played a good April Fool’s joke on her by coloring her oatmeal blue. Her look of disgust soon became hysterical laughter. She got me back later by putting a rubber band around the extension spray tool on our kitchen faucet. As soon as I turned the water on, I got soaked. (Stephen tipped her off on that one. But, I guess I deserve it because I got him very good last year by informing him that I had won a 5000$ Target and then sending him links for all of the things on his wish list that he could finally buy…poor guy, I really had him going.)
