Chalk Critters
It was a sunny day in October. I found a brand new bucket of chalk (cost $5). I sent the girls outside. And then I did not see them again until dinner (priceless).
Growing Up!
Dessie is growing up. One day, she pulled out a pile of paper and asked for scissors and glue. Using her own imagination, she began putting together one long string of paper. It went the length of our house. Then she pestered me to help her spell words for the better part of an hour. She really is a very inventive child. She also was asked to give her first church talk this week. Here is the transcript from her talk on Service:
Service is when we help others. When you serve others, you are serving Heavenly Father. Even though I am only four, there are many ways I can serve others. I serve my friends by being kind. I serve my dad by weeding the plants. I serve my mom by getting diapers for the baby. I serve Ella by helping her unload the dishwasher. I serve Kayla by helping her clean up the toy room. I serve Olena by making her laugh. I know this makes my Heavenly Father happy and it makes me happy too. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Dessie also had a family funny this month. Stephen was cutting pancakes for the girls and she said (very matter-of-fact): "Don't cut Kayla's pancakes first, cut mine first because I am in front of her on my scooter." Apparently, we have a hierarchy in our family. When the family rides on their bikes or scooters, Ella is always first, followed by Dessie who always makes crazy attempts at passing, and then Kayla who slowly meanders behind without any desire to compete at all. In Dessie's mind, this gives Ella first-class status, she falls to second-class status and Kayla is behind her on the totem. It is pretty funny how her mind had that all worked out! As thanks for her generosity of spirit in allowing Dessie to take her place in the hierarchy, poor Kayla now sits furthest from the warm water in the tub and she gets last choice of cup and plate color. Kind Kayla is definitely a fitting adage. Marvelous Mommy sometimes sneaks Kayla extra rewards for her kindness.
Charlotte
Ever since Kayla retired from soccer, I have been pondering how to best help her discover a talent. We have noticed for some time how much she enjoys art, but when I looked into art classes, they were expensive and often inconvenient. Then one day in church, a very impressive girl in our ward gave a talk. The entire time she was speaking, I felt impressed to get her involved with Kayla. Her name is Charlotte and she comes from a very artistic family. So I approached her about giving Kayla “art lessons” once a week at our house. They have made some really creative pieces and Kayla has really started to look forward to Wednesdays. She LOVES Charlotte and so do I!
