August was a great month to relax from our six-week vacation! At first, we really enjoyed sleeping late in the morning and staying in our pajamas most of the day (sans Stephen who still had to go to work). But, it became apparent that many things were just more difficult. For instance, a trip to Walmart or Costco became an outing. Getting ready in the morning was always a hassle because nobody could locate their shoes from the day before. And we are often plagued with boredom. Lauren discovered a great trick however. Anytime a child uses the word “bored,” she assigns a job. Ella dusted the plants and washed windows. Dessie and Kayla were assigned weeding one day. Now they are beginning to find things to do on their own.
The curse and the blessing of summer is that “what we do, we do together!” One funny shopping experience occurred while at JoAnn’s. Because of all of our travel this summer, the girls have become familiar with several mixed cds. One of the cds is a compilation of some of the Lewis family favorites (including the sweater song, goofy movie, etc.). As we walked into the craft store, Kayla and Dessie began singing the words to "The Elephant Love Medley." These were the lyrics they were singing (LOUDLY): “All you need is Love...I was meant for loving you baby, you were meant for loving me. The only way of loving me baby is to pay a lovely fee....etc.” When you hear the words coming from your children's mouths, the song is quite shocking. Lauren is definitely ready for school to start so she can run errands with just Olena for company.
The three biggest highlights of this time period were the celebration of our 11th anniversary, Noelle Phillips' farewell and the baptism of Dane, Mary and Noah.
