Spring Break 2013!

Open house was followed by a week of spring break. The week before break, I received a knock on my door from a 12-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl in my ward who were trying to earn money for camps this summer. They were offering an in-house “Kid’s Camp,” where I could drop-off a child (or all of my children) for a three-hour period at the low, low price of $5 a day. I signed up for every available day and my girls had an awesome time! They came home with piƱatas they had designed, a spy telescope, and all kinds of stories about the great games and cool snacks they had. It was a real treat. Of course, I didn’t hire out all of the fun that week. The girls and I planned our own special Easter celebration. Initially, when I sent out the invites, I told each of the girls to invite some of their favorite friends. We ended up with a guest list of 18. I guess I assumed that there was a strong possibility of a few girls being out-of-town which would reduce the participants to a more manageable number. I was wrong—only one girl ended up being unable to attend! So, I hired a couple of young women to come help me run our Easter shindig. It truly would not have been possible without them. Between dyeing eggs (with at least 8 of the kiddos under age 6) and making towel bunnies, bunny ears, whiskers and egg wreaths, we just needed a few extra hands. The girls had a fabulous time and I was happy that they were able to include all of their cute friends. At the end of the day, we really believed in the saying, “the more the merrier.”

Stephen has also kicked off the ward basketball season—they run it through the local city league. I’m sorry to say that I don’t believe his team will win the stake championship this year (the last game I saw their team was stomped 64-33)…but perhaps I lack faith. However, his team has the best cheerleader ever in Dessie. She sits at the sidelines and yells, “Go Daddy! You are so tough!” in her loudest voice.

Stephen didn’t get to enjoy all of our best spring break moments, but he was part of one of the highlights of the week. The girls decided it would be fun to camp out on the trampoline on Friday night. So, to be as authentic as possible, Stephen gathered some of our bricks and created a fire pit in our sandbox. After roasting s’mores and bundling up in sleeping bags, the girls enjoyed a night under the stars on the trampoline. I’m sorry to say that Stephen did not get a whole lot of sleep that night. (I, naturally, begged out on account of my big belly and the idea of what sleeping on a trampoline would do to my back!) He said that everyone kept on sliding into the middle of the trampoline where there would be kicking, followed by screaming and general orneriness. I put the kids to bed much earlier on Saturday night though and everyone made a full recovery.

What a great week for our family!
