'Tis the Season!

It is very easy for my kiddos to focus on the Santa aspect of Christmas, so we decided to add another component to our Christmas celebration this year. We read Luke 2 and discussed the nativity. We asked them about the gifts from the wise men and then we asked each of our kids what they were going to give to Christ this year for Christmas. At first, they focused on material goods. For example, Kayla offered to give Jesus one of her pillow pets. But, then they started to see the bigger picture and recognize that the best way to show love for Jesus, is to show love for each other. We challenged them to look for ways to serve our family, our friends and our community. Each time they did an act of service, we added a little ornament to our paper tree. By Christmas, it was full. Perhaps the most surprising act of service rendered, was when Ella and Kayla, of their own accord, raked up the front yard. It was so cute to see their sense of pride in their work. This definitely is the season for service!

I think they have been teaching Ella how to make charts at school too. Lately, she's been making lists and graphs at home of all sorts of things. Too cute!
